Wednesday lunchtime.  I only had a few minutes in the Tesco at Ravenside…

I had to get some salad and a chicken breast for my no carbs lunch, newborn formula milk powder and toilet roll.

Would I have space to between the third and fourth fingers on my right hand to grab a bottle neck and shuffle my way over to a cashier without dropping the lot?

You’d be proud of me.  I completed the no-basket-challenge without any breakages and what’s more, bagged a pearler of a wine bargain, which my partner enjoyed with her blended ratatouille on Thursday night.

Gran Conti, Rosso del Molise, DOC, Riserva 2007, (selected by Tesco), 13% vol, £4.99 at Bexhill Tesco’s

This was in the offers section – half price – and the offer is on (I think) until 21 June.

Here’s my tasting note, followed by info from the label:

Clear, medium‾ ruby

Clean, developing in the bottle; medium+ intensity; first aromas – black cherries, prunes, molasses, leather, woodland smells; second nose was more closed (bizarrely), but similar

Dry, medium+ acidity, medium tannins; medium+ alcohol, medium body, medium+ flavours – smoke, dried figs, blackcurrant, more leather; medium+ length

Good, inexpensive; drink now although will keep for a bit (label says no longer than a couple of years after purchase; I reckon at least by the next General Election)

Label also says
‘A generous and richly textured dry red wine.  Made from a blend of Montepulciano and Aglianico grape varieties grown in the hilly Molise region of Central Italy, it exudes bramble fruit flavours and its richness is balanced by sweet spiced notes.’

Although we had it with the aubergine-based baby food and rice, this would be a terrific accompaniment to your favourite pizza!  And I’m a big fan of the ‘up-and-coming’ Aglianico grape.

Perry Points 7/10.  Excellent value for money.  Make sure to decant it, or serve it in big glasses so that it can breathe well…
